Dipole Antennas are antennas which consist of two equal length pieces of wire/metal which are fed from the center. Your typical rabbit ear antennas found on televisions are an example of dipole antennas. TV dipole antennas are used to recieve VHF television. VHF television is broadcast on channels 2-13 in the United States. Channels 2-6 in the US are broadcast on frequencies 55-72MHz and 77-88MHz. While frequencies 175-216 MHz are used for broadcasting channels 7-13.

Dipole antennas are directional antennas. The highest gain from a dipole is when pointing perpendicular to the antenna axis, thus to get the best reception, point the antenna perpendicular (broadside) to the direction of the transmitter. Wikipedia has more information on dipole antennas.
